Donald Edward Kronholm
Donald “Chubby” Edward Kronholm, age 92, of Lake Tomahawk passed away peacefully on Monday, January 25, 2016 at his home.
Memorial services will be on January 30, 2016 at Rock of Ages Lutheran Church, 10441 Highway 70 West, Minocqua, Wisconsin. Pastor Paul Devantier will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00-12:00 with the memorial service at noon. A luncheon in the church’s fellowship hall will follow the service.
Donald was born on December 30th, 1923 in the township of Sigel in Wood County. After graduating from Rudolph High School, he enlisted in the Navy on January 27, 1943. He volunteered for submarine duty and served aboard the WWII Submarine USS Drum SS-228 in the South Pacific. After the war, he was on the commissioning crew for the USS Mero, the last submarine built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. They took the sub down the Mississippi, through the canal, and to Pearl Harbor where he was discharged.
Donald married Ruth M. Albert on June 3, 1950 in Vesper, Wisconsin. The couple resided in Vesper until moving to Lake Tomahawk after retirement. Don was employed at the Nekoosa Edwards Paper Company and also worked as a milk hauler. He worked at Kerry Ingredients (formerly known as Sanna Dairies and Beatrice Foods) for 33 years and retired in 1986.
Donald was a member of Rock of Ages Lutheran Church, a member of the Vesper American Legion-Post 520, a life member of the U.S. WWII Submarine Veterans, and a long time member of Bill’s Musky Club. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents, Edward and Mary (Larson) Kronholm; one infant brother, Edward Kronholm; four sisters, Lorraine Stone, Betty Ladwig, Edythe Dusold, Doris Neutzel and their spouses. He was also preceded in death by his wife’s eleven siblings, their spouses, and several nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.
Donald is survived by two daughters, Martha Kronholm of Wisconsin Rapids and Susie Kronholm (fiancé, Bill Wix) of Vesper. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and many good friends.
