Edward E Hoffman

Edward E. Hoffman, age 89, of Tomahawk, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Harmony Living Center in Wausau. He was born April 9, 1924 in Tomahawk, son of Frank and Helen (Haug) Hoffman. He married Dorothy Wright on January 1, 1943 in Tomahawk. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2000. Ed attended the old Mitchell School west of Tomahawk and Tripoli High School. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1946 in the Pacific. He and Dorothy owned and operated a small farm in Irma from 1946 until 1950. In 1950 they moved back to Tomahawk where Ed started working for Owens-Illinois paper mill. During the 1950's, he began cutting pulpwood as a second job. After retiring from the paper mill in 1986, Ed went to cutting pulpwood full time. Ed became well known in the Tomahawk area as one of the last of the old-time loggers who worked alone with just a chain saw and small Caterpillar cat, not using modern logging equipment. Amazingly, he didn't retire from the logging business until the age of 82. Ed was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served on the Board of Properties for many years. He was also a member of the Tomahawk American Legion Post No. 93. He and Dorothy loved to play cards and to polka. Years ago they regularly attended many of the old-time Tomahawk area card parties and central Wisconsin polka dances. In recent years, Ed still loved to listen to his polka music. Edward is survived by: sons, Gary (Susan) Hoffman, Tomahawk, Keith (Bobbie Morningstar) Hoffman, Hot Springs, Arkansas; daughters, Janice (William) Lippitt, Superior, Patricia (William) Lonsdorf, Wausau; brothers, Walter Hoffman, Loyal, Arthur Hoffman, Loyal; sister, Blanche Scharnick, Brookfield. Ed is further survived by six grandchildren: Angie, Kristin, Lori, Michelle, Will and Brent; four great grandchildren; Haidyn, Rylen, Kashden and Sierra; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, son Edward Jr., and three sisters: Elsie Fyke, Myrtle Ehlke and Gladys Tonn. The Funeral Service with Full Military Honors for Edward Hoffman will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Tomahawk, on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Mark Schoenherr officiating. Visitation will take place at the church on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of service at 11:00AM. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Tomahawk in the spring. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tomahawk.
