Evelyn ("Evey") V. Shellberg, formerly of Chicago, IL, died on March 28, 2013 at the Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill. She was 103 years of age.
Evelyn was born February 16, 1910 in Chicago, the daughter of Fritzhof Anders and Esther (nee Friberg) Nelson. After the death of Fritzhof in 1922, Esther remarried to John Emil Engstrom in 1939 thus becoming Evelyn's new step-father. Evelyn married Arvid P. Shellberg in Chicago on May 18, 1941.
Evelyn worked as a secretary at Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for 19 yrs.. She also worked as a legal secretary for patent attorneys until her retirement in the later 1970's.
For over 50 yrs. "Evey" enjoyed singing alto in the church choirs. She was also instrumental in initiating the Laubach method of teaching English as a 2nd language to those adults who had difficulty learning the English language at her church. Bowling on the church bowling league was also a favorite pastime until the knees failed her.
After her retirement she acquired a new hobby - to hand-sew material, "Trapunta" - 3-D puffing on material, and exhibited these at Art & Craft shows for critiquing, she loved selling at Flea Markets 3 to 4 days a week. "Evey" spent many summer months at her cabin on Sugar Maple Lake in Phelps before returning to Chicago for the winter. In 1990 she moved to Tomahawk where she continued her hobbies of sewing, hand-painting many of the materials, as well as her Craft Shows and Flea Marketing.
Preceding her in death were her parents, step-father, her brother Fred in 1995 and son-in-law Larry in 2010.
Survivors include 1 daughter, Darlene Raunio of Tomahawk, grandson Michael Raunio of Milwaukee WI, granddaughter Lisa (Chris) Volkmann of Eagle River WI, great-grandchildren Elijah Volkmann and Naomi Volkmann both of Eagle River, a nephew and nieces in northern Illinois.
There will be no funeral services held for Evelyn and burial will be in the Phelps Cemetery at a later date.
