Gene Leroy Fiddyment, age 94, a resident of Lac du Flambeau, passed away on December 25, 2022. Our Dad decided he didn’t want to spend a second Christmas without the love of his life, so he went to join Mom early Christmas morning. Gene was born in Joliet, Illinois to Wilbur and Ann (nee Sebby) Fiddyment, and grew up in Waukegan, Illinois. After serving in the Navy, he held many roles, including gas station owner and tavern owner. He vacationed in the Northwoods of Wisconsin many, many times, and in 1963 decided to make it his permanent home, building his house on To to Tom Lake in Lac du Flambeau. Prior to leaving Illinois, he met and dated Marilyn Hartmann, and in 1965, they got married in Waukegan and she moved up to LdF with him. Gene joined the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department in 1966, served as Lieutenant and Sheriff, and retired in 1984. He held other jobs after retirement and “officially” retired at 88 years of age!! But the job he was most proud of was being a Dad and what a great one he was.
He had a wonderful 94 years on this earth and when asked if he could change anything in his life, his reply was always, “Not one damn thing.”
Gene was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, his parents and in-laws, his 2 brothers and sisters in law, his brother-in-law, and 2 nephews. He is survived by his daughters Diann Heisler and Sonja Murray, his sons-in-law (who he thought of as his sons) Bill Heisler and Shawn Murray, his sister-in-law Janet Bailey, and numerous nephews, nieces, and oh so many friends.
He will be deeply missed by his family and hopefully all who knew him. A celebration of life (with beer of course) will be held in the summer.
