George Michael Schellgell born April 24, 1930 in Passaic, New Jersey passed away peacefully on August 24, 2019 at the age of 89.
He graduated from Michigan State and spent the majority of his life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He owned Schellgell Food Service and several restaurants in Milwaukee.
He was a member and past president of Bluemound Golf and Country Club, Western Racquet Club, University Club and Sea Pines Tennis Club. As well as many men’s service groups. George was a private pilot and loved flying and had several different planes in his life time. In later years he flew with his best friend, Welles Murphey. They did volunteer work flying for” Angel Flights “to help transport medically challenged people as well as “Pilots for Paws” that was a dog rescue service. He also loved competitive sailing and took part in the Chicago-Mackinaw Races. He was a member of Nepeenauk Hunting Club near Princeton, Wisconsin where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his special friends as much as the bird hunting. His sports of choice were golf, tennis and skiing. He was a season ticket holder and cheered on the Wisconsin Badgers, the Green Bay Packers, and Milwaukee Bucks.
Before and since retiring and leaving Milwaukee he had spent his time between Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and Watersmeet, Michigan. George and his wife Joanne owned a store, Simple Life, in Land O Lakes, Wisconsin for 21 years, where he loved to meet people and where everyone instantly became his friend. He loved to travel, especially to Germany, as often as he could. His passion was gourmet cooking and his dinner invitations were highly sought after. He loved animals and his many dogs throughout his life were very special to him. He loved his family and was so blessed to have many amazing, special friends in Wisconsin, Michigan, Hilton Head Island, and Germany.
George was preceded in death by his parents George and Marie (Breeman) Schellgell. He is survived by his wife Joanne (Baumgart) Schellgell of 31 years .Daughter Suzy(Ellis) Rieke of West Bend, Wisconsin, and son Fritz (Susan) Schellgell of Mercer ,Wisconsin. Also grandchildren Anne Rieke and Fritz (Becky) Schellgell. His great grandchildren and his very special extended family.
Very special thanks to the team of Doctors at Froedtert Cancer Center and the wonderful Dr Lai and nurses in Oncology at Marshfield Clinic in Minocqua. George will be greatly missed by everyone and always remembered for being a kind, generous and loving gentleman.
There will be a Celebration of Life to be held at a future date.
