Geraldine Elizabeth Schwertfeger (Gerri) passed away in her home in the early morning hours of December 18, 2015. Gerri was born on April 4, 1925 in Eagle River Wisconsin, to John and Emma Tichacek. She had a twin sister (Genevieve) and four brothers, Fred, Earl, Art and Delbert. All of her siblings preceded her in death, along with two husbands Oliver Johnson, Roland Schwertfeger, and her life partner Lauritz (Bill) Nelson. She is also preceded in death by one foster son James Alsteen and one granddaughter Amy Metzger(Shultz).
At the age of 3 Gerri and her sister were adopted by Wesley and Mertle Skinner. She moved to Woodruff in 1954 and raised 4 children of her own, Karen Johnson (Metzger), Daniel Johnson, Alan Schwertfeger, and Dean Schwertfeger, along with two foster children Merle Alsteen, and James Alsteen. She worked at a variety of jobs from a waitress at the Woods (B&C) Café, a nursing assistant at Howard Young, to office assistant at Nelson Insurance Agency before she retired.
Gerri was always known for her genuine compassion, sincere devotion to help others and her unwavering love. After she retired her home became a morning coffee stop for many friends to visit and enjoy her wonderful fresh bread and full cookie jar. Gerri had a full rewarding life that touched so many, everyone she knew loved her and she will never be forgotten.
Gerri is survived by 5 children Karen, Dan (Corinne), Alan (Stephanie), Dean(Samantha), and Merle, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 23rd from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Minocqua. Funeral services will be at 11:00am.
She’ll be laid to rest along side Bill in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
