GERTRUDE ERNA ‘TOOTS’ WAPPEL
Gertrude E. “Toots” Wappel, 87, died on Monday, October 12, 2015, at Aspirus Pleasant View Nursing Home, Phillips.
She was born on October 31, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Carl and Erna (Brede) Mueller. She attended and graduated from Lindblom High School in Chicago with the Class of 1945. She then attended and graduated from Chicago Teachers College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She was married to Alfred “Al” Wappel on June 19, 1950. He preceded her in death on April 30, 2003.
Following her education she was a school teacher in the Chicago area for many years. They then made their home in the Phillips area in 1976. She was then employed as a school teacher in Catawba prior to her retirement.
While teaching in the Chicago area she was also a choir director and sang in Orchestra Hall in Chicago. After making their home in Phillips she was actively involved with the Northwoods Players as a charter member, an officer, and performed in many of the productions, as well as an active member of the Phillips Lions Club. She was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever asked.
She is survived by daughter: Lynn Wappel, Phillips, by son: Keith (Sue Earl) Wappel, by grandson Keith (Gina) Jr., and by great grandson Declan Wappel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband Alfred.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
The Heindl Funeral Home, Phillips, is in charge of the arrangements.
