Harold A. Birkholz, age 85, of 10399 Forest Road, Tomahawk, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Ministry St. Mary Hospital in Rhinelander.
Harold was born on January 17, 1931 in Strum, Wisconsin to Harold and Della (Click) Birkholz. He was married to Reta Cassingam, she passed away in 1995. Harold was a Korean War veteran serving in the United States Air Force. He was employed for 38 years as an engineer for the Milwaukee Road Railroad. In 1963 Harold was awarded the Carnegie Hero medal for risking his own life to literally snatch a 2 year old from between the rails of an oncoming train.
Harold retired to the Tomahawk area 30 years ago. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the tranquility of the north woods.

Harold is further survived by 4 grandchildren (Brent, Ryan, Jason, and Shannon) and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Reta, and one sister.
Funeral services with military rites for Harold Birkholz will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. from the Krueger Family Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m.
