Harold Lowe

Harold E. Lowe, 90, of N9395 Hoffman Road, Tomahawk, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Golden Living-Golden Age Nursing Home in Tomahawk. Harold was born on March 30, 1922 in Dovray, Minnesota to Charles and Ruby (Elliott) Lowe. He married Jan Kropela on July 10, 1981 in Crystal Falls, Michigan. Harold graduated from St. Charles High School in St. Charles, MN, where he lettered in baseball. He liked to tell people he was a "draft dodger" as he joined the U.S. Army before the draft. He proudly served his country in both the Pacific and European Theaters during World War II, and was an ambulance driver. He was recently honored by France for his service there. In September 2012, he went on the Never Forgotten Honor Flight. Following his discharge from the Army, Harold attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and also spent 25 years working there as a maintenance supervisor and purchasing agent. In Tomahawk, Harold worked for 25 years at Golden Age Nursing Home as the maintenance supervisor, and for a time was the "trouble shooter" for four additional nursing homes. He retired in 1993 and worked part-time at several places. Most recently, he was employed at International Packaging Corporation in Tomahawk. Harold was a jack-of-all-trades, and could fix almost anything. One boss said, "If Harold can't fix it, it can't be fixed." Harold was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Tomahawk, a member of the American Legion Post 452 in Spirit, and formerly served as commander. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years, and formerly served as a Scout Master, Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner, and Training Chairman. He also served on two Woodbadge staffs, and was presently a member of the Crystal Lake District Committee, Samoset Council. He was awarded the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, and was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. It has been said: "If you want to touch the past, touch a stone. If you want to touch the present, touch a flower. If you want to touch the future, touch the life of a boy." Harold touched the future many times through something he loved - The Boy Scouts of America. Survivors include: Wife, Jan Lowe, Tomahawk Children, Jill (Gary) Hildebrand, Lake Tomahawk, Scott W. Coey, Tomahawk Sisters, Arlyss Peterson, Peterson, Minnesota, Marillyn Halstead, Danville, Virginia, Lois Harvey, La Crosse Harold is further survived by 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 3 sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Tristen, and 2 sisters. A private family service for Harold will be held at a later date.
