Harry S. Marshall

Harry Schauer Marshall passed away peacefully at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, WI, early Wednesday, December 10th, 2014, aged 69. His wife and four children were able to be with him shortly before he passed, which was a great comfort to everyone. Harry was a resident of Lake Tomahawk, WI and a member of St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church in Minocqua, WI.

Harry was born and raised in Brookfield, WI, and graduated from Brookfield Central High School in 1963. Over the years, he attended college courses at UW - Madison, Marquette University and Nicolet College. He graduated from Nicolet in his late 50s with an Associate degree in Computer Networking. Harry gave his class graduation speech to the delight of everyone.

He married Kathleen (Gorman) on August 26th, 1967. He enlisted in the Army as a young man in his twenties and served several years based in Germany, where his oldest son was born. He and Kathleen settled in Waukesha, WI, where Harry worked for M&I Bank and International Harvester in technical support. He and his family moved to Bulverde, TX, in the mid-eighties where he worked for United Healthcare. They lived there for three years. They moved up to Lake Tomahawk, WI in 1989, where he worked for several companies, including Triumph Twist Drill and Foster-Smith.

Harry was known for his humor and wit, and was loved by many. He volunteered at St. Matthias’ Thrift Shop, and as a classical host for WXPR in Rhinelander. He very much enjoyed his family cottage home “Hardor" on Woodcock Lake, working as a woodsman, installing solar power to remain off-grid, and entertaining his many family and friends. He was a bonfire-builder extraordinaire and a voracious reader and opera lover. He lived his last year to the fullest, traveling to Key West, northern California, and the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, building memories with his family.

Harry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathleen, his children: MAJ Harry (Amy) Marshall, Jr., Erin (Paul) Bierwagen, Kimberly Marshall, and Nicholas Marshall (Shino Takenaka), his brother John Marshall, his eight grandchildren, and his beloved cousins and nephews. He loved all children, and was an informal grandpa, father, brother or uncle to many.

Visitation services will be held at Nimsgern Funeral Home in Woodruff, WI on Friday, December 19th from 4:00-7:00pm. Requiem Eucharist will be at St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church in Minocqua, WI, on Saturday, December 20th at 11:00am. There will be a short visitation prior to the funeral at the church, starting at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the UW Carbone Cancer Center, 600 Highland Ave, Madison, WI 53792, or Agrace Hospice, 5395 E. Cheryl Pkwy, Fitchburg, WI 53711, or WXPR public radio station, 28 Stevens St, Rhinelander, WI 54501.
