Helen Irene Schmidt

Helen Irene Schmidt, 100, of Winchester, Wisconsin died Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at Country Terrace in Minocqua. Helen was born in Winchester March 5, 1912, the daughter of the Pearl (Duranso) and Robert McGlinn. She went to elementary school in Winchester (the present Winchester library). Helen married Roy Schmidt on December 9, 1932 in Butternut, Wisconsin. Helen with her husband Roy lived in Winchester where they raised their six children: Judith, Janice, Sally, Rosalae, Robert, and Jack. She was the oldest resident to have been born and remain in Winchester. Helen was admired and respected by all who knew her for dedication to the loving care and companionship of her angel Judy. Not only was Helen a loving mother, wife, and homemaker, she was an influential member of the Winchester School Board for more than twenty years and a founding member of the Winchester Women’s Civic Club. She also was a congregational member of the Living Hope Church. Helen was a strong woman with an equally strong faith in God and the will of God who will be remembered for her spirit, optimism, “homemade buns”, and “high heels”. She was remembered saying, “You can’t help getting older…but you don’t have to get old! I’m so pleased God has allowed me to get older, an honor denied so many!” Helen is survived by five children: Judith of Minocqua, Janice Campfield of Schofield, Rosalae (Peter) Schultz of Green Bay, Robert (Sharon) of Winchester, and Jack (Therese) of Anaheim, California; nine grandchildren: Bill, Linda, Tom, Todd, Peter, Penny, Erik, Robert Jr., Jack Jr., many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, one sister Edith Bruette and other relatives. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Pearl and Robert, husband Roy, daughter Sally Scheels, grandson Michael Schmidt, great granddaughter Kimberly Scheels, son-in-laws Edward Campfield and William Scheels, brothers George, Robert, Jack, Jerry, Earl (Sonny), and James and sister Dorothy. A memorial service celebrating Helen’s life will be held on Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 AM at Living Hope Church followed by coffee and cake. Helen’s family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Country Terrace for their care, comfort and compassion for Helen during her stay there. The staff made Helen a member of their family. There are no words that can convey how much that has meant to Helen’s family.
