Howard George Burke July 27, 1936 – December 15, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Howard George Burke, age 88, who passed away at home under the care of Aspirus Hospice on December 15, 2024. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 27, 1936, Howard was the beloved son of Harriet and Arthur Burke. He grew up on the northwest side of Chicago, attending Our Lady of Mercy Parish, DePaul Academy, and the University of Illinois Navy Pier. On October 12, 1985, Howard married the love of his life, Margaret Ford Burke, and together they built a life filled with love, joy, and family. Howard was a loving husband, and his devotion to Maggie was evident in everything they shared. Howard was a skilled and dedicated craftsman, known for his work as an interior painter and renowned wallpaper installer. His craftsmanship was admired by many, and he took great pride in the precision and quality of his work. His commitment to his craft was only matched by his deep love and devotion to his family. After spending many years visiting Marshfield, WI, to spend time with his good friend George Loesch, Howard fell in love with Wisconsin. In 1973, Howard and George purchased the Tomahawk Lodge in Tomahawk, WI, which they operated until 1978. Afterward, Howard returned to his passion for interior painting and continued his work with pride until his retirement. Howard was an avid golfer, who enjoyed many rounds on the course, often with his long-time golf partner and friend, Jack Woodall. Known for his fun-loving spirit, Howard was also affectionately known as, Howdog, a nickname he wore with pride among his family and friends.
Howard was the proud father of four children from his first marriage: Patti Hilgendorf, Mary (Mark) Herman, Jennie (Ed) Malis, and Mike (Christy) Burke. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Mindy (Rich) Gabrich, Katie (Ivy) Hilgendorf, Jeff (Ashley) Hilgendorf, Elizabeth (Kyle) Lynch, Kallissa Malis, Eddie (Kali) Malis, Megan (Ryan) Harris, and Chris Burke; as well as twelve great-grandchildren: Adison, Kami, Cylus, McKenzie, Myla, Barrett, Kenew, Winnie, Graham, Berkley, Bryce, and Ruby Margaret. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews, including his niece Kelly, who helped bring him comfort until the end.
Howard’s warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends will be deeply missed. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Aspirus Hospice, Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital and Howard’s caregivers, Gloria and Nette, for their compassionate and loving care during his final days.
