Jewell Loraine Blomberg was born to Raymond and Grace Hunt on October 4, 1929 in Lexington, OK. When she was six the family moved to Canadian County in central Oklahoma where they established a cotton and wheat farm, and maintained a small dairy herd. Jewell received her primary education in a rural one-room school and secondary at the high school in Calumet, OK. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles, CA to work at Douglas Aviation where her oldest brother was employed. While there in her church, she committed her life to the Lord and subsequently enrolled at the Northwestern University in Minneapolis, MN to prepare for missionary service.
In 1952, she was united in marriage to Edwin Blomberg in Oklahoma City, OK. Together the began missionary work in 1953, first in the rural areas of the Nebraska panhandle followed by 25 years in Belize, Central America. While she did not have formal music training growing up, as an adult she learned to play the piano, a small portable pump organ and the accordion. Along with her husband, she spent one year at the Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, TX to learn the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. During that time, she also discovered that she had a talent for painting. In Belize aside from being involved in all areas of mission work with her husband, Jewell also taught in primary schools, which at one time meant she lived by herself in a thatch hut on the river and traveled to school everyday in a small canoe, even though she did not swim. She cared for many children who today still refer to her as “Mom” and cherish life and spiritual insights she shared. But she was also was blessed with motherhood. In 1960, she was given an orphaned baby girl who became her daughter – now Dr. Le Ann Blomberg Tease and in 1970, she was asked to take a baby boy – now retired from 21 years of Army Service, S/Sgt. Victor Blomberg.
Upon returning from service in Belize, she, her husband and son, Victor, returned to their home by Hultman Lake. Along with her husband, she became very involved in Hope Hospice. Jewell served as a home health aide for 12 years and when a patient did not have a care giver at home she brought them into her home, the Blomberg Homestead, to care for them. Additionally, she spent several years providing caring to her aging parents in Oklahoma until they were called “Home”. Her calling to the mission field also meant that in her retirement years she along with her husband led several youth mission trips in Central and South America; on those trips she served as a counselor for the young women as well as the cook.
In her late 70’s, a chronic illness took its toll gradually leaving her incapacitated but, through all the years she remained at home under the loving care of her husband and a few others in the community. On June 13, 2015 after 85 years of life and 63 years of marriage she went home to be with her Lord and Savior.
She is preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Grace Hunt, her brother Lowell Hunt, her brother Jerry Hunt, and two baby sisters. She is survived by her husband Edwin Blomberg of Ogema, WI, daughter Le Ann Blomberg Tease of Gaithersburg, MD, son Victor Blomberg of Lampasas, TX, five grandchildren (Ashley Mass, Lisa Blomberg, Brandon Blomberg, Brian Blomberg and Johnny Blomberg), 1 great-granddaughter (Valerie Blomberg) and many other folks who she mentored in their journey of faith.
