Joan M. Sweeney, age 59, of Madison, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, September 21, 2016.
Joan was born on January 18, 1957 in Tomahawk to Darwin & Janet (Palmer) Sweeney. She was a 1975 graduate of Tomahawk High School. After graduation, Joan moved to Madison. She was employed in the Work Study Department at UW Madison for over 40 years. Joan was a bubbly and friendly person. She enjoyed traveling ; especially to Las Vegas and on cruises. She loved her family, enjoyed dancing and music. Joan had a passion for animals. Joan operated the Wisconsin Rottweiler Rescue Association for over 25 years. She gave a home to thousands of dogs over the years, including the 30 that she had currently been fostering.
Joan is survived by her mother - Jan Zuiker, of Tomahawk; her siblings - Kathleen (Jeorge Kessler) Sweeney, of Annoka, MN; Maria Connemara, of Milwaukee; Ann (Brian Nelson) Sweeney, of Wayzata, MN; Jane (Rev. Mark) Gass, of Tomahawk; John (Scarlet) Sweeney, of Rhinelander; and James (Muna) Sweeney, of China. Joan is further survived by her special friend & life partner– Dennis McClain, her coworker and dear friend – Rachel Alsworth, and the entire Zuiker family.
She is preceded in death by her father, Dar; Brother Dennis; and step father, John Zuiker.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, September 30th at the Sheraton Hotel in Madison on John Nolen Drive from 4-8. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:30PM followed by time of remembrance, visitation and light hors d'oeuvres.
