John R. Starynski Jr. MD, 61, died Thursday March 7, 2019 at his home in Minocqua, Wisconsin. He was born the son of John and Shirley (nee Lewis) Starynski Sr. and raised in Philadelphia, PA.
The eldest of 5 siblings, he attended Walter Biddle Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences in Roxborough, Philadelphia. He completed the Penn State BS/ MD Accelerated Program which allowed him to complete college and medical school in 5 years. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College now known as the Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia in 1980. He completed residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Geisenger Medical Center in Danville, PA in 1985. He joined the Orthopaedic Group of Western Maryland in Cumberland,Maryland where he practiced for more than a decade. He was also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He practiced orthopaedics for 30 years but practiced most recently at Gundersen Moundview Hospital and Clinics in Friendship Wisconsin.
It was during his residency that he discovered skydiving. He accomplished over 750 jumps and achieved his skydiving instructor rating. He also became a pilot was also a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
He was known for his dry wit and compulsive love for photography, aviation, math and all things involving the equity markets. He was a devoted Catholic, a loving husband , father and brother.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Pontone, son Andre Starynski, and daughter Nina Starynski, sisters Donna Cooke, and Sharon Starynski and brothers, Gregg Starynski and Richard Starynski and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Shirley.
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 18th at 11:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Woodruff, WI with a visitation from 10:00 am till time of service. Interment will take place at West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA.
