Joseph "Jumbo" Varsho, age 82, of Tripoli, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Golden Living Center-Golden Age in Tomahawk. He was born March 19, 1927 in the Town of Hewitt to the late Leo and Mary (Hirsch) Varsho. He attended St. Joseph School in Hewitt, and graduated from Marshfield Senior High School. He was married to Betty Fehrenbach on September 2, 1950; she survives.
Jumbo worked for Berg Equipment after high school, and played Triple A baseball for the Wausau Lumberjacks as a Pitcher. He served his country in the United States Army during World War 2. He worked for the Wood County Highway Department, then for the Marshfield Street Department, and later worked for Eddie Nelson Blacktoppping. Jumbo and Betty moved to the Tripoli area in 1971, he then became the caretaker at the Island Club in Lac du Flambeau. He drove school bus in Tripoli for 19 years. Jumbo was and avid hunter, fisherman and was a great trapper for weasels'. He also enjoyed bowling and trap shooting. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin for 65 years, and the American Legion in Marshfield for 55 years.
Survivors include his Wife, Betty Varsho of Tripoli, 6 Brothers, 3 Sisters, and many Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by his Parents, 1 Sister, and a Brother-in-law.
Memorial Mass for Joseph "Jumbo" Varsho will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 1:30 PM from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Pier-Willow. Rev. John Anderson will officiate with Interment at the Marshfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 12:30 PM until the time of services at 1:30PM.
