Lorraine M. Murphy

February 4, 1913 — July 6, 2014

Lorraine Maxine Murphy, 101, of Lake Tomahawk Wisconsin passed away on Sunday, July 6, at home with family by her side. Visitation will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Woodruff on Wednesday, July 16, from 9:30 a.m. until the Celebration of Life Mass scheduled for 11:00a.m. Cremation rites have been accorded and burial will be in Wilderness Cemetery, Lake Tomahawk. Memorials may be made to either Ministry Hospice Home Care or to Holy Family’s Building Fund. Honorary pallbearers will be her four grandsons. Lorraine Evers Murphy was born on February 4, 1913 in Clinton Iowa to Leo and Elsie (Luedtke) Evers. Lorraine married Edmund Joseph Murphy on April 18, 1938 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church Rectory. Lorraine was a resident of Clinton until moving permanently to Lake Tomahawk in 1981 after vacationing in the area for many years. While their first vacation residence was a summer home, Ed and Lorraine built a year-round home in 1981. The tornado of April 1984 destroyed this home along with most of the 40 acres of trees on the property. Ed and Lorraine were resilient and quickly rebuilt on the same site and Lorraine continued to live in the house alone after Ed’s death in 1986 until she was joined by her daughter and son-in-law who moved to Wisconsin in 1998. Lorraine and her sister Arleda Seidl owned the Fourth Street Variety, Gift and Toy Store for 20 years. Lorraine lived life to the fullest and was a very talented lady. She began china painting and watercolor in mid life and always dismissed her work as non-professional but her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren lovingly cherish her wonderful talent which will provide continuing memories of what a wonderful matriarch she was to her family. Her other hobbies included crafts of all types, and a good game of bridge or any card game. Lorraine was a charter member of the Lake Tomahawk Lioness Club and a recipient of the Lioness of the Year Award. Lorraine was named Grand Marshal of this year’s Lions’ 4th of July parade. The town is 100 years old this year and Lorraine exceeded this milestone. Her other memberships include the Lake Tomahawk American Legion Auxiliary, Holy Family Circle of Women, Lakeland Art League and for many years she sold raffle tickets during Snowshoe Softball Games. Lorraine is survived by two daughters; Sharon (Donald) Hilgendorf of Lake Tomahawk and Carol (Dwain) Lipker of University Park Florida. She was so proud of her seven grandchildren which include Lisa Kettler (Wayne-deceased) of Lake Tomahawk, Laura (Gary) Krogman, Park View Iowa, Kevin (Lisa) Hilgendorf, Spring Hill Kansas, Heather (Mark) Cooley, Clinton Iowa, Brian (Leaett) Lipker, Bradenton Florida, Loren Lipker, University Park and David (Rebecca) Lipker, North Port Florida. She was G.G. to 17 great-grandchildren whom she enjoyed to the fullest. Additional survivors include three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband Edmund, parents, sister, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews and grandson-in-law Wayne Kettler. Lorraine will always be remembered for her strong faith, beautiful smile and gentle giving nature. She taught by example and was the best.
