Marguerite “Sally” Moravek
Marguerite J. “Sally” Moravek, age 90 died peacefully while under the care of Flambeau Home Health and Hospice at her home in the Township of Elk on 10 November. She was born March 5, 1928 to James and Cora Cummings in the Township of Emery. She was the 10th of 11 children. She was the last surviving member of the James and Cora Cummings clan. Marguerite attended the Dover grade school in Emery and graduated from the Phillips High School in 1946.
Marguerite Cummings married Karl T. A. Moravek, August 10, 1946. She is survived by her husband and five children; William (Vernette) Barry (Hai Young) Brian (Ann), Bradley & Beth (Rich); nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Marguerite was a devoted Christian and always had a bible at her side. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Although she traveled extensively and had many experiences, she was always a “girl” from Emery.
Marguerite’s role as a mother of 5 children is accented by the fact that all 5 children received university degrees. In addition to her motherly duties she participated in activities in each of the communities the family resided.
While living in England, she served as Vice President of the Air Force Officer’s Wife’s Club at RAF Station Brize Norton. As a volunteer, her duties included supervising the operation of a pre-school for dependent children as well as operating a day-care center for military dependent children.
When Marguerite’s husband was assigned to the Faculty of the AFROTC program at UW Superior, she became a member of the UW Superior Faculty Wife’s Club. The Club participated in community programs and raised funds for student scholarships.
In 1968 Marguerite’s husband retired from the United States Air Force. He took a position on the UW Superior Faculty as Director of Career Planning/Placement and Alumni Affairs and held those positions until he retired in February 1989.
The Moravek’s moved back to Phillips in 1993 and became involved in various community activities: Board Members of the Phillips Community Czech-Slovak Annual Festival and a member of the Wisconsin Association for Home and Community Education. Marguerite served several years as the Co-Chairperson for the International Education Committee.
She was a proud member of the Wisconsin State Society of Mayflower Descendants.
