Marilyn was a renaissance woman: a missionary, an educator, a musician, a generous philanthropist, a caring community activist, a tireless volunteer and also a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was born in 1931 to Mabel and Walter Welsch in Joliet, Illinois. She married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Walters, in 1953 after they both graduated from the University of Illinois. They lived in Heidelberg, Germany and Fort Knox, Kentucky before settling in Joliet, Illinois where she raised three children and taught music.
Marilyn and Jerry also served as missionary teachers in Tanzania, East Africa on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Marilyn and Jerry had three children: David (Janet), Kathy (Bob Newman), Karol (Nelson Mangione) and five grandchildren: Daniel (Allie), Loren (Victoria), Matthew (Natalie), Christopher (Samantha) and Tiffany. She was graced with her first great grandchild, Benjamin, one week before she passed.
As we mourn her, may we all model ourselves on her faith, joy for life and love of adventure.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be planned when it is safe to gather in Sayner, Wisconsin, the summer of 2021. Donations may be made to Shepherd of the Lakes Church in Sayner, Wisconsin. https://www.shepherdofthelakeschurch.org/
