Dr. Nancy Van Prooyen went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, February 17, 2018.
She was born February 24, 1948 in Wausau, Wisconsin to the late Nicholas and Lorraine (Gutowski) Van Prooyen. She was a graduate of Wausau High School, Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music, Bryan College, West Georgia College and Vanderbilt University where she received her doctorate in educational leadership. Nancy possessed a keen intellect that was surpassed only by her magnetic personality. Nancy's friends number in the hundreds.
Nancy dedicated her life to serving her community in a variety of ways. She impacted the lives of children and families throughout her career as a dedicated educator. She taught elementary school at Chickamauga City Schools then served there as principal and curriculum director. She was an assistant principal at Ringgold High School for four years. Miss Van Prooyen received her Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from William Jennings Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. While at Bryan, she received the Student Teacher of the Year Award and the Faithfulness and Loyalty Award. Miss Van Prooyen received her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from West Georgia College. In 1981, she added Administration and Supervision to her Masters degree. Later she obtained her Administration and Supervision certificate and also an Education Specialist degree.
In the last 15 years of her career, she served in Hamilton County Schools as a school improvement specialist serving Ooltewah High School, East Ridge High School and many other schools in the area. She served on the Walker County Chamber and the Hutcheson Health Enterprise Board. She had been a member of Gamma Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and Battlefield Pilot Club. Nancy was of the Baptist faith.
Nancy is survived by a sister, Shirley Anderson of Tomahawk, WI and brother, Rev. Gerald (Jerry) Van Prooyen of Cadillac, MI., 8 nieces and nephews, and several grand nieces and nephews. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and eldest sister Sally.
A graveside service for Dr. Nancy Van Prooyen will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery in the spring. Krueger Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family.
