Peter Nick Poulos

September 4, 1933 — May 11, 2013

Peter Nick Poulos (né Gianacopoulos), 79, of Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin, Korean War Veteran, beloved husband of Maria, and devoted father to Timothy, Nick and Anna, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2013, surrounded by his loving immediate family and closest friends. Born on September 4, 1933, Peter spent his earliest years on Chicago’s south side. His was one of many hard-working, industrious Greek American families, and family members remain in the Chicago area today. He was predeceased by his beloved sister Elaine Maniatis and his parents, Katherine and Nick Gianacopoulos, and is survived by his sister Mary Ann Bissias. Peter attended Chicago’s prestigious Morgan Park Military Academy, graduating in 1952, and soon afterwards, enlisted in the army and served in the Korean War. After a wonderfully traditional Greek courtship and marriage to his wife Maria in 1959, Peter attended and graduated from Elmhurst College in Illinois. Peter and Maria settled in the Chicago area, raising their children Timothy, Nick and Anna, and stayed until retiring to Peter’s beloved Wisconsin Northwoods. In retirement, Peter cherished life up north; he enjoyed working at Ace Hardware in Woodruff, and loved having coffee in the morning at Tula’s. For all that Peter accomplished in his lifetime, what remains most remarkable and lovely about him are the things that can’t be readily documented: he approached all that he did with quiet grace, elegance and an enduring love for precision and detail; he had a lifelong talent and passion for fine woodworking and cabinetry; he was a voracious reader; and he was a man of impeccable tastes: a collector of antique clocks, an opera and classical music afficianado, and a collector of vintage family photographs. He was a true gentleman and a real mensch. To coin one of his favorite phrases, we say to Pete: good show, old boy. Peter is survived by his loving wife Maria, and his children Nick, Tim and Anna, as well as his wonderful grandchildren Stephen, Eric, Sofia and Zoe. The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Father Vladimir Lecko, as well as to Peter and Maria’s “Northwoods Family” – loyal friends who have been a blessing both before and throughout Peter’s journey. Finally, we say a special thanks to Peter’s loyal buddy Archie, whose time and generosity showed no bounds. In honor of Peter’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrews Orthodox Mission Church, 11399 Airport Road, Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin, 54568.
