Raymond Sanford Grinde III
“Rick” | “Grizwold” | “Papa G”
February 25, 1953 – April 21, 2025
Raymond Sanford Grinde III, known to friends and family as Rick, Grizwold, or simply Papa G, passed away peacefully at his home in Mercer on Monday, April 21st, after a short but courageous battle with aggressive cancer. He was 72 years old.
Born on February 25, 1953, Rick was one of six brothers raised by Raymond and Janet Grinde. He grew up surrounded by the outdoors he loved so dearly and developed a lifelong passion for hunting, fishing, horseshoes, and storytelling-often with just the right amount of exaggeration.
Rick was married to Jean (Hanko) for 17 years, and together they had two children, Kristina and Bill. Eight years ago, he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Deb Skrobot. The two shared a beautiful chapter together, and Deb was instrumental in ensuring Rick's final days were comfortable and filled with love.
Rick spent his first 68 years in and around Arlington, Wisconsin. When he retired in 2021, he made the move up north to Mercer-his beloved "God's Country"-where he embraced a slower pace and savored the beauty of the Northwoods. Rick and Deb enjoyed many things together in this chapter of life: Music in the Park, snowmobiling, fishing, traveling, dinners with friends, and more than anything, Rick loved maintaining his property. Lawn care and snow removal weren't chores to him-they were passions.
Rick worked for many years at Amerhart lumberyard in Madison/Sun Prairie, where he was a trusted and hardworking presence. But his true joys came from time spent outside and with the people he loved most. His infectious laugh, sharp wit, and gift for storytelling made him the life of any gathering. His mantra was simple: "Nobody has more fun than we do."
He is survived by his daughter Kristina (Richard) Tkachuk and son Bill (Amanda) Grinde; grandchildren Ava and Austin (children of Kristina and Richard), and Charlotte and Ben (children of Bill and Amanda); and his brothers Randy, Larry, Terry, David, and Kevin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Janet Grinde.
Two celebrations of life will be held:
- May 3rd at The Lazy Ace Saloon in Mercer, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
- May 22nd at The Arlington Inn in Arlington, beginning at 3:00 PM
In honor of Rick's spirit, we hope everyone will take time to enjoy the outdoors, tell a great story, and have as much fun as he did.
In Lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Rick to American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, or the Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters Snowmobile Club.
