Russell V. Toppen, age 88, a longtime Ettrick resident, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2017 at Marinuka Manor, Galesville, WI.
Russell was born on March 7, 1928 in Ettrick to Casper & Nora (Scarseth) Toppen. He was married to Vivian Bergum on October 9, 1954 in West Salem. Russell retired after 26 years at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse where he worked in the recreation hall. Prior to this, he worked the family farm. He was involved in his Glasgow and Hardies Creek community holding positions within the church and enjoyed being part of the choir. Russell also participated in Galesville bowling and horseshoe leagues. He was an active donor to the Red Cross and donated 10 gallons over the years.
He was very proud of his family and is survived by 3 sons, Todd(Karen) Toppen of Wausau, WI, Peter(Karla) Toppen of Ettrick, WI, and Thomas(Stephanie) Toppen of Wheaton, IL. A brother, Dr. Spencer Toppen of Denver, CO, 9 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, his parents, and sister.

The Memorial Service for Russell Toppen will take place at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Hardies Creek Lutheran Church in Ettrick, WI. Pastor John Ashland will officiate. Visitation will take place from 10:00AM until the time of service at 11:30AM.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to Hardies Creek Lutheran Church.
