Thomas Edward Sweet, age 91 from Winchester, WI, formerly from Schererville, IN, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017, in Rowlett, TX, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born to Jacob Overton Sweet and Violet Imo Sweet (nee Kurts) on May 28, 1925, and is survived by his sister Kae Holmes (nee Sweet) of Texas, sisters-in-law Elaine Worzella and Sylvia Curran both of Wisconsin and many nieces, nephews, wonderful friends and caregivers.
Thomas was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helmi (Helen) Sweet (nee Hill), brother Gerald Dean Sweet, sister Maxine Jane Roe (nee Sweet), brother-in-law Charles "Charlie" Hill, nephews Gary Roe, Larry Roe, Gregory Roe, Thomas Roe, Bradley Sweet and niece Suzanne Koch (nee Curran).
After graduating from Dyer High School in 1943, Thomas served in the 83rd Infantry Division as Field Medic in France and Germany during WWII. The 83rd was known as the "Thunderbolt" division. They landed on Omaha Beach took part in the Battle of the Bulge and later were the first Allied troops to enter Langenstein, a sub-camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp. In 1993, the 83rd Infantry Division was recognized as a liberating unit by the US Army's Center of Military History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Thomas is a lifetime member of the VFW Post 717 in St. John, IN.
After the war, Thomas and Helen owned and operated the “Welcome Inn” tavern on Halsted Street near Harvey, IL, for 8 years. Thomas was also employed by Union Carbide Corp. for 37 years. He retired as a buyer in the purchasing department of the Linde Division.
Since 1964, Thomas and Helen spent their summers at the lake in Winchester, WI. After retirement, they spent 22 winters at the McAllen Trailer Park in McAllen, TX. Thomas was an avid golfer and loved to play poker, especially Texas Hold’em.
Graveside services for Thomas and Helen will be held on Sunday, July 23rd at 11:30 AM at Winchester Cemetery in Winchester, WI following the services there will be a Celebration of Life Reception at the Skyview Lodge and Supper Club in Winchester from 12:00 Noon till 3:00 PM.
