He was a self-employed window washer in the Milwaukee and Chicago area for 10 years with some of his jobs including skyscrapers and high rise apartment buildings. Vernon was involved with the TRAILS program as a teacher of drum and dance for children when he lived in Lac du Flambeau. He contributed his knowledge of culture and language to the Lac du Flambeau Museum and was also involved as a volunteer for the Bayfield Boy Scouts. He enjoyed traditional dancing, teaching and telling cultural stories to others and was always willing to reach out to those who were struggling or who had lost their way.
