WILLIAM JOSEPH EDER
William J. Eder, 95, Mellen, longtime resident of the Phillips area died on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at the Mellen Manor Nursing Home, Mellen.
He was born on February 18, 1921, in Mellen, the son of George H. and Rose (Hofstra) Eder. As a child he moved with his family to Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada. He attended and graduated from Fort Frances High School in Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WW2 in England, France and Germany from 1942 to 1945. Following his military service he was employed by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., as a chief engineer on iron ore carriers from 1945 until the time of his retirement. He was married to Zorka Mason in January 1960, in Waukegan, Ill., She preceded him in death in December 1978. Following his retirement he made his home in Price County to the cabin he loved on the Flambeau River. In his free time he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening both flowers and vegetables
He was a member of St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, Phillips, and the Lane-Kreiling American Legion Post #122, Phillips.
He is survived by 1 brother: George (Carol) Eder, Washburn, Wi., by 2 sisters: Jane Ringersma, Phillips, and Betty Renko, Superior, by 1 step-daughter: Nancy Verona, Texas, and 3 step grandsons: Michael, Monte, and Matt Verona, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife Zorka, by 1 sister Rosemary Horak, by 3 brothers-in-law, John Horak, Gene Renko, and Charles Ringersma, and by one nephew, William "Bill" Ringersma.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, Phillips, with Fr. Gerald Hagen officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Woodruff, Wi., Military Honors will be conducted by the Lane-Kreiling American Post #122, and the Frank and Michael Baran VFW Post #5778, both of Phillips. Friends may call on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, Phillips from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service.
The Heindl Funeral Home, Phillips, is in charge of the arrangements.
